What is a Mental Health Plan in Australia?
A Mental Health Plan is a document that your GP can create to refer you for subsidised mental health services. Under the Better Access to Mental Health Treatment initiative, you can access up to 10 sessions per year with a psychologist or psychiatrist at a reduced cost.
How does a Mental Health Plan work?
- Visit your GP: Talk to your GP about your mental health concerns and request a Mental Health Plan.
- Choose a provider: Use the Mental Health Plan to find a psychologist or psychiatrist who is registered with Medicare and accepts Mental Health Plans.
- Start your treatment: Your chosen provider will work with you to develop a treatment plan and provide the necessary services.
Important things to know:- Medicare rebates: Medicare will cover part of the cost of your sessions, reducing your out-of-pocket expenses.
- Gap fees: Some providers may charge a gap fee, which is the difference between the full cost of the session and the Medicare rebate.
- Waiting lists: It's important to be aware that there may be waiting lists for some psychologists or psychiatrists, especially in certain areas.
