Teldoc Online Prescriptions FAQs

  1. What is a prescription?

A prescription is a written order from a licensed healthcare provider that authorises a patient to obtain a specific medication from a pharmacy. It includes details such as the medication name, dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment.

  2. What types of medications require a prescription?

Prescription medications are those that are considered unsafe to use without medical supervision. They often have a higher risk of side effects, drug interactions, or misuse. This includes antibiotics, antidepressants, certain pain medications, and many other medications.

  3. Can I get any medication through telehealth?

No, not all medications can be prescribed through telehealth. Controlled substances (such as certain narcotics and stimulants) typically require an in-person evaluation. Additionally, some medications may require specific tests or examinations that cannot be performed remotely. The telehealth provider will determine if prescribing a particular medication is appropriate during the consultation.

  4. Can I get a prescription through telehealth?

Yes, in many cases, a licensed healthcare provider can prescribe medications through a telehealth consultation, provided it is medically appropriate and complies with all relevant regulations.

  5. What conditions can be treated with prescriptions through telehealth?

Many common conditions can be treated with prescriptions through telehealth, including: Urinary tract infections (UTIs), Sinus infections, Allergies, Skin conditions (e.g., rashes, eczema). Certain mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression – often for refills or ongoing management). Birth control. And many others. Note: This list is not exhaustive, and the suitability of telehealth for prescribing will be determined by the provider during the consultation.

  6. What information do I need to provide during a telehealth consultation to get a prescription?

Be prepared to provide: A detailed description of your symptoms. Your medical history, including any allergies or existing medical conditions. A list of all medications you are currently taking (including over-the-counter medications and supplements). Your preferred pharmacy (name, address, and phone number).

  7. How will I receive my prescription?

Our online doctors send prescriptions electronically (e-prescribing) directly to you or your chosen pharmacy. This is the most efficient and secure method.

  8. How long does it take to receive my prescription after a telehealth consultation?

With e-prescribing, the prescription is sent to you or the pharmacy immediately during the consultation.

  9. Can I get refills through telehealth?

In some cases, refills can be obtained through telehealth, especially for ongoing management of chronic conditions. However, the provider will determine if a refill is appropriate based on your medical history and current condition. For some medications or situations, an in-person visit may be required for refills.

  10. What if I have questions about my prescription?

You can contact our friendly reception team or your pharmacist if you have any questions about your prescription, such as dosage, side effects, or drug interactions.

  11. Can I get prescriptions for controlled substances through telehealth?

Regulations regarding prescribing controlled substances via telehealth vary by jurisdiction. In many cases, new prescriptions for controlled substances are restricted and may require an in-person evaluation. Telehealth may be used for refills or management of existing conditions under specific circumstances. The telehealth provider will advise you on the applicable regulations. We do not provide prescriptions for restricted medications on the S8 or S4d NSW schedule. For these you will need to see an in person GP.

  12. Can I get a prescription bulk billed?

We offer bulk billing for our prescription consultations for: patients under 12 months of age, or patients experiencing homelessness.
