STI Testing Online - FAQs

1What STI tests does Teldoc Australia offer?
Teldoc Australia provides comprehensive STI testing, including tests for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomoniasis, HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), and other common sexually transmitted infections. Our experienced doctors will assess your needs during a telehealth consultation and provide a pathology referral tailored to your situation.
2 Are STI tests bulk-billed at Teldoc Australia?
Yes, all pathology tests for STIs are bulk-billed, meaning there are no out-of-pocket costs for the tests themselves if you have a valid Medicare card. You’ll receive a pathology referral during your telehealth consultation, which you can take to any participating pathology collection centre.
3 How much does a telehealth consultation for STI testing cost?
We offer bulk-billed consultations for eligible patients, including those with a valid Australian Health Care Card or concession card. For patients with a Medicare card but without a concession card, a private fee applies (starting from $69), with a Medicare rebate of approximately $44 available, which is automatically processed and refunded to your nominated bank account. Please visit our pricing page for full details.
4 How does the STI testing process work with Teldoc Australia?
Book: Schedule a confidential telehealth consultation through our website, available within 15 minutes. Consult: Discuss your concerns privately with one of our qualified Australian doctors via secure video or phone call. Test: Receive a bulk-billed pathology referral for the necessary tests (e.g., urine, swab, or blood tests), which you can take to a pathology collection centre. Results: Your doctor will follow up with you to discuss results and any required treatment or referrals.
5Can I get tested for STIs even if I don’t have symptoms?
Yes, many STIs, such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, and HIV, can be asymptomatic. Regular screening is recommended if you’re sexually active, especially with new or multiple partners. Our doctors can provide guidance on how often you should be tested based on your risk factors.
6What types of tests are used to detect STIs?
Depending on the STI, testing may involve: Urine tests or swabs (vaginal, throat, or anal) for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomoniasis, and HSV. Blood tests for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. Your doctor will determine the appropriate tests based on your sexual history and symptoms, if any.
7 How long does it take to get STI test results?
Test results typically take 2–3 business days to be processed by the pathology lab. Your Teldoc doctor will contact you to discuss your results and next steps, including treatment if needed.
8Are STI consultations and test results confidential?
Absolutely. Teldoc Australia prioritises your privacy. All consultations are conducted on secure, encrypted platforms, and your test results are handled confidentially in accordance with Australian privacy regulations.
9 Can Teldoc Australia prescribe treatment for STIs?
Yes, our doctors can prescribe appropriate medications for STIs like Chlamydia, Trichomoniasis, and Herpes when clinically appropriate. For conditions like HIV, Hepatitis B, or Syphillis, we can provide management advice and referrals to specialists if needed.
10 Do I need to see a doctor in person for STI testing or treatment?
In most cases, STI testing and treatment can be managed entirely through telehealth. However, if you have severe symptoms (e.g., severe pain or heavy bleeding) or require specific treatments like antibiotic injections for Syphilis or Gonorrhoea, we may refer you to a local doctor or sexual health clinic for in-person care.
11How often should I get tested for STIs?
The frequency of testing depends on your sexual activity and risk factors. General recommendations include: Every 6–12 months for sexually active individuals. Every 3 months for men who have sex with men or those with multiple partners. During pregnancy, especially for Chlamydia, Syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis B/C. Your Teldoc doctor can advise on a testing schedule suited to you.
12 Can my partner be tested or treated through Teldoc Australia?
Yes, your partner can book their own telehealth consultation to discuss testing or treatment. For STIs like Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea, it’s important for partners to be tested and treated to prevent reinfection. Our doctors can provide guidance on partner notification and treatment.
13 What should I do if I test positive for an STI?
If you test positive, your Teldoc doctor will discuss treatment options, which may include antibiotics for curable STIs like Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, or Syphilis, or antiviral medications for manageable conditions like HSV or HIV. We’ll also provide advice on preventing reinfection and may recommend re-testing (e.g., 2 weeks after treatment for Gonorrhoea or 3 months for Chlamydia).
14 Can I access PrEP or PEP for HIV prevention through Teldoc Australia?
Our doctors can discuss PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) for HIV prevention and provide prescriptions or referrals to specialists if needed. We can also guide you to the appropriate services.
15 How do I book an STI testing consultation with Teldoc Australia?
You can book a telehealth consultation directly on our website at teldoc.com.au, or call our reception team at 02 9064-2839. Appointments are usually available within 15 minutes, and you can connect with a doctor from the comfort of your home.
