What Is Acne?

Acne is a very common skin condition that happens when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and sometimes deeper, painful spots. It's most common in teenagers and young adults, but many adults get acne too. Hormones, genetics, some medicines and certain skincare products can all play a part.

Signs of Acne
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Red, tender pimples
  • Pus-filled spots
  • Deeper, painful lumps under the skin
  • Marks or scarring after spots heal
How Our Doctors Can Help

During a secure telehealth consultation, our GPs can:

  • Talk through your skin history, current skincare and anything you've already tried
  • Recommend a skincare routine and over-the-counter options that suit your skin
  • Prescribe treatment if clinically appropriate, with eScripts sent to your phone or preferred pharmacy
  • Refer you to a dermatologist if your acne is severe, scarring or not improving, as some treatments for severe acne can only be started by a specialist
  • Arrange blood tests where there may be a hormonal cause

Photos can help your doctor assess your skin, and your doctor will let you know if an in-person review is needed.

Tips for Managing Acne
  • Wash gently twice a day with a mild, non-soap cleanser
  • Choose non-comedogenic (non-pore-blocking) skincare and sunscreen
  • Avoid squeezing or picking spots, which can increase scarring
  • Give a new treatment time to work, as many take several weeks to show a difference

Teldoc Acne Treatment FAQs

  1. Can I get acne treatment online through Teldoc?

Yes. Our FRACGP-qualified, AHPRA-registered GPs can assess your acne by video or phone and recommend treatment, including prescriptions if clinically appropriate.

  2. Should I send photos of my skin?

Photos can help, and a video consultation lets the doctor see your skin directly. Your doctor will explain how to share images securely.

  3. Can a GP refer me to a dermatologist?

Yes. If your acne is severe, causing scarring or not responding to treatment, our doctors can send a referral to a dermatologist of your choice.

  4. How long does acne treatment take to work?

Most acne treatments take several weeks to show an improvement, so it’s important to keep going and follow up with your doctor if things aren’t improving.

  5. How much does an online acne consultation cost?

Consultations are $55 on weekdays and $75 on weekends and public holidays. There is no Medicare rebate for general consultations. See our Pricing page for full details.

  6. Are acne consultations bulk billed?

Bulk billing is available for eligible patients, such as patients experiencing homelessness. Otherwise private fees apply. See our Pricing page for eligibility.
