Is Telehealth Right for You? Who It Suits and When In-Person Care Is Better
May 14, 2024The Teldoc Pharmacy Network is for Australian community pharmacies that want to give customers a simple way to see a GP when they need one. When a customer needs a doctor’s assessment, a new prescription or a medical certificate, your team can point them to Teldoc, where an AHPRA-registered GP can usually see them by phone or video within 15 minutes. Joining is free for pharmacies, with no fees or contracts.
This page explains how the network works, what’s involved for your pharmacy, and how to get started.
Why pharmacies refer customers to telehealth
Pharmacists are often the first health professional people see. Every day, customers come in who need something a pharmacist can’t provide on the spot, such as:
- a new prescription, or a repeat for a medicine when they’ve run out of repeats
- a medical certificate for work, study or carer’s leave
- an assessment for symptoms that need a doctor
- a referral for blood tests, imaging or a specialist
If their usual GP has no appointments for days, the customer may go without care or leave to look elsewhere. A quick telehealth option gives your team a clear next step to offer.
How the Teldoc Pharmacy Network works
- Your team identifies a customer who needs a GP. Pharmacists use their professional judgement as usual.
- The customer books a Teldoc consultation. They can book online or by phone, using their own device. Your posters and pamphlets explain how.
- An AHPRA-registered GP assesses them by phone or video. Consultations are available 7 days a week, 9 am to 7 pm (Sydney time), and most patients are seen within 15 minutes.
- The GP decides on the right care. If treatment is clinically appropriate, the GP issues an eScript to the patient’s phone. The doctor may also provide a medical certificate or referral, or advise the patient to be seen in person.
- The patient chooses where to fill their script. They can use your pharmacy or any other pharmacy they prefer.
Teldoc doesn’t provide emergency care, chronic disease management plans, workers’ compensation consultations, S8 or S4D controlled medicines, weight-loss medicines, or care that needs a hands-on examination. Customers with an emergency should call 000.
What your pharmacy receives
- A listing in the Teldoc Health Network. Your pharmacy can be listed in our Health Network directory, which helps patients find a nearby pharmacy, specialist or allied health service.
- Posters and pamphlets. Printable materials explain to customers how to book a telehealth consultation. You can download them from our pharmacy partners page.
- A simple referral option for customers who need a doctor, without extra systems or software for your team.
- No cost to join. There are no fees and no contracts.
What it costs your customers
Teldoc consultation fees are paid by the patient. General consultations are $55 on weekdays and $75 on weekends and public holidays, with no Medicare rebate. Some consultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card, including sexual health consultations and babies under 12 months. Full details are on our fees page, so your team can give customers accurate information.
